Historical Significance
The course occupies a site of profound historical importance. The upper portion of the park sits on the beautiful grounds of a Veterans Administration Hospital built in the 1940s that was destroyed in the devastating 1971 Sylmar earthquake. This 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck at 6:01 AM on February 9, 1971, killing 49 people at the hospital and causing its complete destruction.
The hospital, originally constructed in 1926 as a tuberculosis facility before becoming a general hospital in the 1960s, was reduced to rubble by the earthquake. The site was transferred to Los Angeles County in 1972, the ruins were cleared, and Veterans Memorial Community Regional Park was established in 1979. Today, a memorial plaque commemorates the veterans, nurses, and staff who lost their lives in the tragedy.
