Getting Started in Disc Golf
What is disc golf?
Disc golf is played like traditional golf, but with specialized flying discs instead of balls and clubs. The objective is to complete each hole in the fewest throws possible. Players throw from designated tee areas toward elevated metal baskets with hanging chains that catch the discs.
I'm new to disc golf. What should I know?
Start with slower, more stable discs like putters and mid-range discs. Avoid high-speed drivers until you develop proper form. Focus on accuracy over distance, as most holes at Sylmar are under 300 feet.
What discs should beginners use?
For beginners, we recommend:
- Putters for short, controlled throws
- Mid-range discs for versatility
- Lightweight discs (under 169 grams) for easier control
- Avoid high-speed drivers initially
What are the basic rules?
- Objective: Complete each hole in the fewest throws
- Throwing Order: Player farthest from basket throws first
- Lie: Throw from directly behind where your previous disc landed
- Putting: Within 10 meters of basket, maintain balance until disc comes to rest
- Completion: Hole is complete when disc comes to rest in the basket
How does weather affect play?
Wind: Use heavier, more stable discs in headwinds
Rain: Bring extra towels and consider grippier plastic discs
Heat: Bring extra water – temperatures can exceed 100°F in summer
Cold: Discs become stiffer and may require different throwing techniqueWhat about course etiquette?
- Let faster groups play through
- Help others find lost discs
- Keep noise levels reasonable
- Pack out all trash
- Don’t alter trees or course features
- Wait quietly while others throw
